About

Joey Adrian MacNeil

I am a filmmaker, writer, artist and a teacher. I make short films and animation that have been featured on the CBC and shown at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. I currently work as a substitute art teacher with the CBVRSB. I also teach workshops at Studio Villa Nova. I create engaging lessons and a positive learning environment where students learn to develop their art skills.

In 2001 I graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. From NSCAD I gained a deep understanding of various fields of art, from fine art mediums, methods such as charcoal, ink, watercolour, conte, and pastels.

As a teacher not only do I want to pass onto students a deeper understanding of Art practice and theory but to give them the opportunity to create something that they can be proud of. I would hope to take the spark that interested them in art in the first place and show them the way to allow it to develop and grow and enlighten the rest of their lives.

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

About

Sandy MacNeil

I am currently working as a substitute teacher with the Cape Breton Victoria School Board. I also teach workshops at Studio Villa Nova and the Cape Breton Christain School. Prior to this I was a full time teacher for four years with the Halifax Regional School Board.

Before I started pursuing a career in teaching I worked as a Pre-Press Technician at the National Post and a Photography Assistant at Patricia Barrow Photography and Calnen Photography there I became familiar with portrait photography. I have 20 years of photography experience and a strong knowledge of Adobe Photoshop. My skills in both traditional fine arts, photography and print production have equipped me to provide many different services from photographer to teacher to artist.

In May of 2007, I graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University with a Bachelor of Education - Art Specialist Degree.  Prior to that I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. While taking my BFA at NSCAD I acquired a major in photography. I also took several advanced drawing and painting courses. I also have a solid base in art history. I am a practicing artist as well as an art teacher and photographer and I enjoy making art in several different mediums.

The images I produce are embraced with excitement for their pure essence of telling a story or evoking an emotion. Having some kind of camera in my hand as long as I can remember, I grew up seeing the world through a lens. My journey as a photographer and an artist is ultimately the one within. I record in my work what I see and feel.

I enjoy art for arts sake, continually seeking out images in a quest to capture the subject in its purest form. I have a great deal of respect for art and photography; The power in which a single photo or image can provoke such emotion.

My style is a unique blend. I work with digital photography manipulation as well as drawing, painting and collage with paper and found objects. I also work with paint on canvas and traditional photography methods. I combined these methods to produce simplistic, classic, timeless pieces.
